What is the name of the neck dressing thats are used in Black Adder by King George?

It is a ruff, they started off small but got bigger and bigger, eventually getting so big that the wearer was unable to feed themselves, necessitating an implement to assist and the fork was invented. I don't know if there is any truth to it but, it's a nice story.
